At dawn, Wang Jianxin tied up his luggage.

A canvas bag and a net bag filled with all the belongings.Su He stood at the door of the yurt, holding a cigarette in his hand and looking at him with narrowed eyes.

"Have you brought everything?" Su He asked.

"We've got it all."

Su He walked over and put a cloth bag into his hand: "Eat on the road."

Wang Jianxin opened it and saw that it was a lump of milk and a few pieces of dried milk, wrapped in oil paper and tied tightly.

"Thank you, Uncle Su He."

"Thank you." Su He waved his hand and the cigarette ashes fell on the ground, "If you go over there, be careful. There are many wolves, so don't run out at night."

"Remember."

"Supplies will be delivered once every three months. If there is anything missing, write it down and tell the person who delivers it then." Su He paused, as if he had something else to say, and finally just waved his hand, "It's really urgent. Send a message to the herdsmen nearby."

Wang Jianxin nodded.

The sound of a car was heard in the distance.A green jeep came over the dirt road and parked outside the yurt.

Two people got out of the car, one in military uniform and the other in civilian clothes. The man in military uniform was short and had a tanned face. He walked over and asked, "Wang Jianxin?"

"I am."

"Get in the car." The man in military uniform said, "I'll take you to the station."

Wang Jianxin picked up his luggage and looked back at Su He.

Su He said: "Go."

Wang Jianxin turned around and got in the car. When the car started, he looked out of the rear window. Su He was still standing at the door of the yurt. The smoke in his hand was glowing red, getting smaller and smaller, and finally he couldn't even see the yurt.

The man in casual clothes was sitting in the passenger seat and turned around: "My name is Zhao Changqing, and this is Squad Leader Li. We understand your situation. Captain Su He recommended you, saying you are attentive and learn things quickly."

"I will do my best." Wang Jianxin said.

"Well." Director Zhao said, "Battle is injured, and his post is vacant. We have moved you to a border patrol station. That station is a little off, but it is relatively safe. The terrain on the other side of the barbed wire fence is flat, making it difficult to hide people. The main thing you need to do is walk along the line every day to see if the net is broken and if anyone has crossed the border."

"I understand."

"Are you able to use a gun?" Squad Leader Li asked.

"I know it." Wang Jianxin said, "I fired fifty rounds of ammunition during training a few days ago."

"It's enough." Squad Leader Li said, "If you really encounter trouble, don't hesitate to shoot."

The car drove for most of the day.The road is getting worse and worse. There were grasslands on both sides, and not a single person could be seen. Occasionally, a small group of yellow sheep could be seen running past in the distance, raising a puff of dust.

At around three o’clock in the afternoon, the car stopped.

Wang Jianxin got out of the car, his legs were numb. There was a clearing in front of him, and a gray mountain ridge could be seen in the distance. The wind was so strong that it made people unable to open their eyes.

Squad leader Li moved a backpack from the car: "Your rations, salt, and seasonings are all in it. The gun and bullets will be given to you when we arrive at the station."

Wang Jianxin put on his backpack and picked up his luggage.

"Remember, patrol every day, fifty miles of defense line, and ride a horse. Set off in the morning, come back at noon, and do some work of your own in the afternoon." Director Zhao said, "After three months, we will come to deliver supplies and inspect the work."

Wang Jianxin nodded.

Squad leader Li patted him on the shoulder: "Young man, you can endure loneliness alone."

Wang Jianxin stood there and looked at the house in front of him.

The house is very low, with rammed earth walls and a roof covered with hay and weighed with a few stones. There is a sheepfold next to the house, surrounded by wooden sticks. There are about ten sheep inside, lowering their heads and gnawing hay on the ground.Next to the sheepfold is a vegetable field, about an acre in size, growing sparsely.

There was a man standing at the door of the house, wearing an old military uniform with a tanned face.

Wang Jianxin walked over.

The one came up to him: "Wang Jianxin?"

"Yes."

"I am Lao Zhou." Lao Zhou stretched out his hand, which was covered with thick calluses.

Wang Jianxin shook hands with him.

Lao Zhou pushed open the door of the adobe house: "Come in."

The room was very dark, with only one small window, about the size of a washbasin.A clay kang, an iron stove, a pot, a wooden cabinet, and a lame table, padded with bricks. There was a walkie-talkie on the table, a green iron box with a layer of dust on it.

"That's all." Lao Zhou said, "The kang can sleep, the stove can cook, and the cabinet can store things. Do you know how to use a walkie-talkie?"

"I learned it during training."

"Yes, for emergencies. Save the battery and send a new one every three months." Old Zhou paused and pointed outside, "The ten sheep outside are mine. I also grew the vegetables in the vegetable field. If you want to keep them, I will give them to you at a discounted price." Page (1/3)
