At nine o'clock in the morning, the first group of survivors appeared at the national road intersection.
When Da Liu saw them from the east sentry tower, the three men were bending and trotting along the drainage ditch on the north side of the national highway.A man, a woman, a teenage boy.The man walked in the front, holding an iron pipe removed from somewhere in his hand. The woman held the boy's hand tightly. The boy carried a bulging schoolbag on his back. After running a few steps, he looked back, as if he was afraid that something would catch up from behind.
"Attention at the main entrance, three o'clock direction, three people, two adults and one child, about two hundred meters away, approaching." Da Liu's voice came from the intercom, steady and clear.
Lin Yue was squatting on the wasteland behind the power distribution room and digging soil with Zhao Dezhu. When he heard the sound of the intercom, he stood up and patted the mud on his hands."Uncle Zhao, you continue. I'll go to the door."
Zhao Dezhu didn't even raise his head, and dug the short-handled hoe into the soil one by one."Go ahead. This land needs to be plowed today."
When Lin Yue walked to the main entrance, Zhao Ming was already waiting behind the iron gate.He shoveled the engineer in front of him, stood upright, and the expression on his face was the professional seriousness unique to security personnel.Lao Zheng stood next to him, holding an outdoor knife in his hand, with the blade facing down against the side of his leg. His posture was very relaxed, but his eyes were staring at the observation hole on the iron door without blinking.
"Open the door or not?" Zhao Ming asked.
"Look first." Lin Yue approached the observation hole.
The three people have reached the outside of the barbed wire fence. The man was probably in his early forties, wearing a dusty gray jacket. There was a scratch on his face that was still bleeding—not a bite, but a fingernail scratch, maybe scratched by someone else in the chaos. The woman was probably in her thirties, with disheveled hair. She had lost one of her left shoes, and her bare feet were covered with mud and tiny pebble marks. The boy stood behind them, with his schoolbag strap tied in two tight knots on his chest. His face was so dirty that the original color of his skin could not be seen, but his eyes were not red or swollen from crying. Children who had never cried during this kind of escape were either scared out of their wits, or they were much stronger than adults imagined.
The man saw the sentry tower on the wall and the burrs on the barbed wire flashing in the sun.He did not continue walking forward, but stopped about five meters outside the barbed wire fence, placed the iron pipe on the ground, and raised his hands above his head.
"We don't bite!" His voice was hoarse as if sandpaper had been scraped across his throat. "We haven't been bitten - really, we checked ourselves. Can you let us in? The child hasn't eaten anything all night."
Lin Yue glanced at Lao Zheng.Lao Zheng carefully looked at the man's pupils and exposed skin through the observation hole, and then nodded slightly."The pupils are not dilated, the skin color is normal, and there is no twitching. The scratches are old and have scabbed over. There is no visual sign of infection."
"Open the door." Lin Yue said.
Zhao Ming opened the iron door to a gap that allowed only one person to pass through.Lao Zheng stepped out, the blade still attached to the side of his leg, and walked in front of the three people. He first picked up the iron pipes on the ground and put them aside, then asked three people to stand in a row and visually inspected them from head to toe - neck, arms, calves, all exposed skin. Then they were asked to turn around and check their backs.
The boy glanced at the man, and the man nodded. The boy took off his schoolbag and unzipped it.Inside were two bottles of mineral water, half a pack of biscuits, an exercise book and a pencil case.Lao Zheng took a look and returned his schoolbag to him.
"Come in. Register first after entering. You will be quarantined and observed for six hours. This is the rule."
The man's Adam's apple rolled up and down, and his voice became hoarse than before."Thank you. Thank you."
The three people were taken into a temporary isolation area next to the main entrance - it was the outermost room of the cold storage management room. There was a folding table, a few chairs and a box of mineral water in it.Ah Qing was already waiting at the door with a first aid kit on his back.He asked the three people to sit down, first took their temperatures one by one with a thermometer gun, and then
"Are you a doctor?" The woman looked at Ah Qing's skillful movements, and finally there was a hint of vitality in her voice.
"Hygienist," Ah Qing said, drawing a steady circle on the edge of the wound with the cotton swab in his hand. "I was a soldier and know how to deal with trauma. Where did you come from?"
"South of the city." The man's voice was very low, as if he was afraid of being heard. "Yesterday afternoon when something happened at the airport, we happened to be visiting relatives in the north. If we were at home at that time, now-" He did not finish.
Lin Yue stood at the door of the isolation room, looking at the family through the door frame. The boy was wiping the ashes on his face with his sleeve, wiping twice to reveal the fair skin underneath. Then he took out the half pack of biscuits from his schoolbag and handed it first to his mother and then to his father. The man didn't answer, and neither did the woman. They pushed the cookies back into the boy's hands.
"Brother Lin." Zhao Ming walked behind him and lowered his voice, "The man just now said that they came from the south of the city, but they were in the north when the accident happened. They were lucky."
"It's not luck." Lin Yue said, "Yesterday was Monday, and their family went to visit relatives in the north - which means they don't go to work or go to school on Monday. Maybe they asked for leave, or maybe they are freelance. No matter which way, they lived one day longer than most residents in the south of the city."
Zhao Ming was silent for a moment."Will there be more to come?"
"Yes." Lin Yue turned around and looked at the dirt road outside the main entrance. The sun has turned the road white, and a few black spots can be vaguely seen moving on the national highway in the distance. Whether they are people or zombies, it is too far to see clearly."Today is the second day of the apocalypse. Those who can get here by themselves are the first wave of lucky people. In two days, those who can get here are not necessarily the lucky ones."
He did not elaborate on this statement. But Zhao Ming understood - after two days, those who can survive through half of the city and reach the northern suburbs must either be really lucky or be in enough danger to survive. After the second year of the apocalypse, the most terrifying thing among survivors is not the zombie virus, but the human heart.
At ten o'clock in the morning, the second group of survivors arrived. This time there was only one person.
A man in dark blue overalls, about thirty years old, was riding a bicycle with a tool bag strapped to the back seat of the bicycle. He stopped at the intersection of the national road and saw the wall and barbed wire fence of the logistics park. He hesitated for about thirty seconds, then got on the car again and rode towards the main entrance.
Lao Zheng stopped him at the door. The same inspection process as before - pupils, skin, exposed parts, all normal. The tool bag contained a set of electrical tools and two multimeters.
"Are you an electrician?" Lao Zheng asked.
"From the electric power company. From the substation in the north of the city." The man's voice was urgent but clear. "The automatic protection of the substation tripped yesterday afternoon. Three colleagues and I stayed on duty. In the middle of the night, there were gunshots and screams outside. In the morning, the gunfire stopped and we ran separately. I came this way. Do you have electricity here?"
Lao Zheng did not answer this question. He took the man into the isolation room, did an examination with Ah Qing, and then called Wang Hao through the intercom.
Wang Hao ran over from the power distribution room and saw the multimeter and insulating tape in the tool bag. His eyes lit up, but the expression on his face was still serious - he always subconsciously kept a straight face in front of strangers.
"You said you work at a substation? How many kilovolts is it?"
"One hundred and one." The man said, "I'm from the secondary equipment maintenance team."
"Relay protection?"
